QHL - Scenic Paints for Film sets

Colours & Effects

Reliable colour systems, metallics and sparkle — water-based and production-ready.

On a working set, colour has to be more than “nice”. It needs to be repeatable, quick to approve, and reliable under real lighting. Surfaces get built fast, handled a lot, patched, repainted and re-touched — and the finish still has to read consistently on camera.

At QHL, we mix a wide range of custom colours and support water-based finish systems for film and TV. From clean neutrals and hero tones to controlled metallic and sparkle effects, we help you build looks that are achievable, repeatable, and practical to apply — not just impressive on a sample board.

Colour matching and custom mixing

If you have a reference, we can match it — and more importantly, make it repeatable.

You can start with:

  • a reference image or moodboard
  • a colour standard (RAL / NCS / Pantone where relevant)
  • an existing set piece / panel that needs to be reproduced
  • a workshop sample that’s “close but not quite”

We convert the reference into a repeatable mix, so the approved colour can be reproduced later for:

  • additional set pieces and pick-ups
  • reshoots and rebuilds
  • touch-ups during production
  • parallel builds and multi-location work

(Image idea: side-by-side “reference vs. matched panel” + a small swatch grid.)

Metallic effects that stay controllable

Metallic looks can elevate a build — but they can also become unpredictable if the system isn’t designed for production reality. We focus on metallic finishes that remain manageable across large areas and under changing light.

We support metallic directions such as:

  • aluminium/silver tones, steel and cooler metallics
  • warmer metallics (champagne / brass-like / gold-ish tones)
  • pearlescent / soft shimmer effects
  • controlled sparkle where the brief calls for it

Key priorities:

  • even application and reduced patchiness
  • controlled sheen for camera-readability
  • repeatability across elements and batches
  • repair strategy for touch-ups and continuity

(Image idea: 6–12 metallic swatches shot at the same angle + one “large-area” example.)

Sparkle and shimmer layers on existing builds

If a set piece is already painted, we can still add effect.

We supply water-based effect layers that can be applied over previously applied colours to introduce:

  • subtle shimmer
  • pearlescent lift
  • controlled sparkle
  • metallic-style highlights (depending on the base + system)

This lets you keep the original colour direction, while adding a camera-visible “lift” on top — without rebuilding the colour from zero. We can advise on the right layer choice based on substrate, base paint, sheen level and the look you want.

Water-based systems for workshop pace

We stay focused on water-based solutions because they’re generally better aligned with workshop realities:

  • practical application and clean-up
  • fast workflows and predictable handling
  • easier integration into typical scenic pipelines

We’ll always advise based on your real constraints: substrate, schedule, target sheen, lighting, and the level of durability needed.

Fast approvals and repeatable results

A finish is only useful if it can be approved quickly and then reproduced reliably. We support a practical workflow:

  1. you share the reference + substrate + scene requirements
  2. we propose a realistic finish direction and system
  3. we supply samples for approval under your lighting
  4. once approved, we help you keep it consistent through production
