QHL - Scenic Paints for Film sets

Safety & Cleanup

Film sets move fast — and surfaces get touched, stacked, wrapped, and rebuilt under pressure. Our aim is to keep the workflow clean, predictable, and crew-friendly, without creating unrealistic expectations about what we supply. We’re a distribution and supply partner: we provide tintable, water-based coating systems and peelable protection coatings, plus practical guidance around drying, handling and cleanup for those systems.

Water-based first (where performance allows)

Whenever possible, we work in water-based systems to keep the process set-friendly:

  • Cleaner handling and easier day-to-day cleanup
  • Predictable drying and recoat behaviour with the right coat weight and airflow
  • Repeatable colour matching for consistent results across panels and pickups
  • Practical compatibility across common set substrates when paired with the correct prep

Keep the set clean (defect prevention)

Most issues come from rushed handling and contamination. A few simple habits reduce rework:

  • Keep surfaces dust-free between coats and before approvals
  • Avoid cross-contamination (especially silicone residues and release agents)
  • Use interleaf for stacking and transport to prevent blocking and imprinting
  • Masking: use the right tape for the surface, and remove at the right time to avoid tearing and lift
  • If anything changes (substrate, primer, effect, method), run a quick test panel first

Peelable coatings (protection + faster reset)

Peelable coatings can be a practical tool for temporary builds and high-traffic areas:

  • Protects finished looks from splatter, scuffs, and contamination during build and shoot days
  • Can simplify resets and strike: peel away the sacrificial layer instead of scrubbing or repainting
  • Helps protect high-value scenic finishes during transport, installation, and staging
  • Useful as a temporary barrier layer in messy zones where surfaces get abused

We’ll recommend where peelable protection makes sense, and how to apply and remove it reliably for the substrate and schedule you’re working with.

Footprint mindset (common-sense, not marketing)

We support productions that want to minimize impact in a practical way:

  • Fewer failed panels through fast sampling and clear system choices
  • Less rework through repeatable recipes and controlled colour matching
  • Smarter logistics: consolidating supply where possible to reduce last-minute partial shipments
  • Using peelable protection when it reduces unnecessary repainting and heavy cleanup

If you share the substrate, the look, and the timeline, we’ll propose a system we can supply and a workflow that keeps the set moving — cleanly and predictably.
